Section Information for Spring 2023

Between 1830 and 1860 authors in the United States sought to create a distinctly “American” literature, clearly distinguishable from its European roots.  This was also a period of active social and political change; Americans debated how to respond to issues including slavery, existing religious traditions, the degradation of the environment, and labor conditions, and how to talk about the past in light of these contemporary questions.  Most course readings will be shorter works that circulated in the very active periodical press of the era. We will also read several major works, including Thoreau’s Walden and Douglass’ Narrative, in full, and students will complete an individual project on a text of their choosing.
