Section Information for Fall 2026
How do you imagine a future that you were never meant to be in – and what is the power in doing so? This class explores Indigenous speculative fiction from the twentieth century to the present, reading novels, stories, and films that deploy speculation as a vital tool for decolonization. Reading across advanced literary and cultural scholarship from the historicist to the highly theoretical, we will situate Indigenous futurisms within the historical and contemporary contexts of settler colonialism as well as within much longer histories of Indigenous aesthetics and sovereignties. Students will also explore Indigenous Research Methods as a way of conducting scholarship in literary studies as they develop their own independent research projects.
This class is designed as a Capstone/Apex for BA Literature, Cultural Studies, and Creative Writing Concentrators (and sometimes other concentrations), but is also open to any interested student who has completed more than 85 credits by the time the class starts and has passed ENGH 305. Email Professor Hurley at jhurle@gmu.edu for more information or to enroll!
Enrollment is controlled. Please email Professor Hurley at jhurle@gmu.edu for permission to register.
