ENGH 356 - 001: Contemporary Poetry

"No book is worth reading that isn’t worth re-reading,” wrote Susan Sontag, a sentiment that is true of no genre more than poetry. In this class we’ll read, re-read, listen to, discuss, write about, and imitate a kaleidoscopic selection of contemporary poetry. The skills developed through the close, line-by-line reading and discussion of poetry are the foundation for a lifetime of closer observation and deeper understanding. Opportunities for Q & A’s with living contemporary poets will enrich our experience. Course work will consist of reading and annotating contemporary poetry and criticism, discussions, attendance at poetry readings, and short weekly written assignments that build toward a final project.
